The exhibition "Le Grand Paris" was opened on Wednesday 29 April 2009 by Nicholas Sarkozy, président de la République française. During the opening speech, he announced a €35billion investment on new transport links for Paris.
This exhibition is the result of a special commission by the President of France involving 10 international architecture and urban planning teams, with the task of proposing how to position Paris to face a post-Kyoto future whilst exploring its further growth as a worldwide metropolis.
The team at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, in co-operation with the London School of Economics (LSE) and Arup analysed many world cities and established 10 key principles which were then applied to the specific context of Paris.
The animation, seen above, which was produced for the exhibition pavilion in Paris is based on these ten principles and shows how these principles might apply to Paris as a whole and more specifically to one zoomed-up area. "The North Axis" - an area currently occupied by the TGV and railway tracks from Gare du Nord, is presented at a larger scale to the left of the main screen.
The exhibition, showing all ten consultant teams’ proposals, runs until November 2009 at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine à Paris.
