Portfolio Architectural Projects Shanghai Masterplan

Shanghai Masterplan

Description

This animation (seen above in a slightly adapted form for the purposes of on-screen viewing) was produced for the "Richard Rogers + Architects" exhibition running at the Centre Pompidou in Paris from November 2007 - March 2008, the Design Museum in London from April 2008 - August 2008 and the CaixaForum in Barcelona from March 2009 - June 2009. Further venues incude Madrid in 2009, Taipei in 2010 and Singapore in 2011. Future dates to be confirmed.

The animation was rear-projected trough a purpose-built Perspex model of the unbuilt Shanghai Masterplan to clearly und logically illustrate the masses of information contained in a scheme of this scale.

The world renowned architectural practice - formerly known as 'Richard Rogers Partnership' - designed the scheme in the early 1990's when it was invited to join a French government initiative consulting the Shanghai administration on the creation of a four square kilometre new city district in Lu Jia Zui to become Shanghai's 21st century nucleus for future economic growth. The scheme proposed a mix of uses, including commercial, residential, hotels and public buildings for up to 500,000 people.

Working closely with the talented in-house model makers at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners to ensure the projection would match the model accurately, and the best possible material finish was being used, the projected animation truly lets this astonishing model of hundreds of little Perspex cubes spring to life.

The exhibit has to be experienced in order to appreciate the effect this produces, but the photo above gives a good impression of what has been achieved by the fusion of a 3-dimensional model with 2-dimensional animation.

After Paris and London, the exhibition "Richard Rogers + Architects" will be touring further around the world. For updates on dates, locations and venues please refer to the links on the right.
